Book Review:

Fun With Modeling Clay is a great visual resource for older children to experiment with making things out of clay. Barbara Reid, the author of Have You Seen the Birds and Two by Two, books made up entirely of clay scenes, has demonstrated in this book some beginner projects involving modeling clay. The book begins with some introductory must read learning sections called About modeling clay: tips and tools you'll need and Basic shapes. About modeling clay covers the types of clay available, how to work with clay, tools you'll need to create the textures of the clay projects you'll be making. Basic shapes covers the shapes you will be making (accompanied by diagrams of the shaping process) to create the projects in this book. This book is very hands on because the clear diagrams encourage successfully being able to form the shapes to make the clay projects. The detail of the diagrams includes showing how to pinch the clay with your fingers to form things like tongues, bills, bodies, ears, clothing and lamps as well as using the tools to shape the clay. After the Basic shapes section the author starts you off slow with making simple animal shapes such as snakes, spiders and ladybugs. Following animals is Leaping lizards including turtles and crocodiles, Birds of a feather, Sitting pretty (sitting cat, lion, mouse), Four-legged friends, A zooful of animals, People-Body building, Dressing up, Face it!, Pull up a chair (furniture), People movers (vehicles) and large scenes in Pictures, Setting the scene, Buildings, Home sweet home and 3-D scenes.
