Book Review
Fresh Ideas in Dried Flowers is full of unique and unusual arrangements.
The actual arrangements are divided into four chapters, Classic
Centrepieces (10), Hanging Arrangements (7), Seasonal Favorites
(5) and Gallery of Gifts (7). There is a handy Flower Drying Chart
at the back of the book, which outlines the best methods for drying
the various types of flowers you will be using for the arrangements
in this book. There are also resources for equipment, florists,
and info on commercial drying methods available (i.e. freeze drying
services you can purchase) and additional supplies and methods you
can find out about online.
Following the introduction there is an important section with descriptions
and photos of Materials and Equipment you will need for the arrangements
in the book. When you are ready to begin working with flowers and
fruit, it is important to read the Getting Started chapter which
is all about methods of preparing the fruits and flowers for making
the arrangements. Step-by-step instructions explain a variety of
methods for you to choose from for preparing flowers and fruits
from the small-scale pressing and air-drying of flowers to the large
scale freeze drying of fruits and flowers
Once you have prepared the flowers and/or fruit for arranging it
is important to learn the Basic Techniques of flower arranging demonstrated
in the next chapter. There are clear, helpful photos illustrating
the step-by-step instructions for portions of the arrangements in
this book (preparing a holder, securing flowers into foam, wiring
small flowers and clusters, wiring dried fruit, making a bow and
removing unwanted foliage from stems).
The best parts of Fresh Ideas in Dried Flowers are the interesting
and unusual assortment of materials used in the distinctive, beautiful
arrangements explained in step-by-step instructions accompanied
by clear, helpful photos. The unique arrangements include dried
flower art, a hanging dried fruit arrangement and the incorporation
of candles. The arrangements also combine materials such as Exotic
Lavender Artichokes, Flowering Red Oregano, Japanese Lanterns and
Silver Dollar Luminarias as well as candles with other flowers and
fruit. The arrangements are beautifully displayed in square, round,
rectangle shaped containers made of tin and glass including mosaics
as well as baskets. |
