Casting On is the first step in the knitting process. The number of stitches you cast on depends on your pattern.
Casting on stitches Using the needles required by your knitting pattern and a small ball of wool (you could use a leftover piece from a previous project) you can practice casting on stitches before you actually start your knitting project.
Cast on stitch step 1

Hold end of the ball of wool in your palm, securing it with four fingers leaving you thumb sticking out. Use your right hand to pick up the strand of wool and wrap a loop around your thumb. Leave the ball of wool to your right.

Cast on stitch step 2

Use the right hand again to pick up one needle and insert the tip through the loop wrapped around your thumb from the bottom through to the top opening of the loop.

Cast on stitch step 3

Now you can remove your thumb from the loop as long as you securely hold the loop in place with one hand. Or you can leave your thumb in place until you insert your other needle and cast on your second stitch (the loop is actually the first stitch). Insert the tip of the other needle from the bottom through the to the top opening of the loop.
