Book Review

I really like the craft presentation style of Nature Crafts for Kids because it is totally geared toward children. The photos accompanying the clear step-by-step instructions are of kids making the crafts. This is really empowering for children because not only are the photos really clear in demonstrating the step it shows that children can do it. This book is not only entertaining with fun craft ideas but also educational with the additional information provided. Sometimes little articles that relate to the craft are included with the instructions (i.e. rain facts with the birdbath craft, egg shapes and colors with the egg craft and “What is sand?” with the sand painting craft).

The craft/project ideas in this book are divided into the four seasons with the materials and projects mostly made up of things available in each individual season. Some of the projects using complex materials like the cement for the Cement Birdbath require adult assistance but I prefer to call it an opportunity for parent participation. Then the activity is no longer something the children need help with but something a family can do together in creating something wonderful to decorate their home.

  • Cement Birdbath
  • Fish Kites
  • Nesting Shelf
  • Finding and Cleaning Clay
  • Candied Violets
  • Wormery
  • Sun Prints
  • Nature Kaleidoscope
  • Mushroom Spore Prints
  • Leaf Stained Glass
  • Corn Husk Flowers
  • Snow Sculpture
