Book Review
My Very Own Mother’s Day – A Book of Cooking and Crafts
is the essential resource for children planning a Mother’s
Day celebration at home. The best part about this book is how much
information you are getting in this small book. This book is divided
into five main chapters: Good Morning Breakfast, Spring Breeze Brunch,
Picnic in Paradise, Afternoon Tea and A Down-Home Dinner. I like
the variety of recipes (i.e. Hot Maple Moo, Delights of the Garden
Quiche, Rolling Stones Salad, Crazy Crab Circles and Bundles of
Joy) in each section accompanied by a related craft at the end of
the chapter. This provides children with choice concerning the kind
of day they are going to plan for their mother.
Before beginning any of the crafts or recipes there are some introductory
sections to read and with the assistance of an adult, children can
plan and accomplish the successful preparation of a Mother’s
Day celebration. I like the hints and tips about getting started,
suggestions of easy recipes and crafts for the younger children
helping, nutrition, variations and themes for the celebration. There
is a cooking smart section that is essential for safe use and handling
of foods and equipment. An adult’s participation is key here
to inform children how to work safely in the kitchen and when crafting
What I really like about My Very Own Mother’s Day is the
child friendly style of the content in this book. The instructions
are simple and easy to understand, the drawings are colourful and
attractive and the photos provide children with a visual image of
how they could arrange the meal they are preparing for their mother.
The content in this book is not only useful but also interesting.
In almost every chapter there is additional information on Mother’s
Day whether it be the history of Mother’s Day, extra craft/gift
ideas to make and puzzles to do for some Mother’s Day fun.
