Book Review
If you are looking for a thorough introduction to making mosaics
this book is it. Methods and materials are clearly laid out
at the beginning of the book with descriptions and images that make
beginning the mosaic process painless and fun. Design techniques
are explained in detail but in basic enough language for a beginner
to understand. Emphasis is placed on practicing the techniques
such as cutting the pieces for your mosaic (making the tesserae)
to ensure success. Safety is of great concern to the editor
of this book. It is as important as what tools, materials
and methods you need to know about to get started as well as to
complete the projects in this book. I really like the fact
that there are options when it comes to the color schemes of the
projects you are interesting in doing. For each project there
are 3 different color templates available in addition to the original
one represented in the color photograph. There are simple
to grand projects to meet everyone's design and decorating needs.
Various other skills are required to complete some of the projects,
for example the Hand-shaped Mirror incorporates woodworking into
its makeup. Modern, Eastern, Islamic and Mexican inspirations
are integrated into this book to give you a wide variety of projects
to choose from in order to suit your tastes or match the decor in
your home. A word of advice, while the beginner may be able
to complete all the projects because of the clear instructions given,
practicing with one of the smaller projects (i.e. the Golden
Candlesticks or the Hand-shaped Mirror) would help you feel comfortable
enough with the mosaic process to tackle a larger project.
I was really inspired by this book as I have always wanted to create
mosaics, having seen them all over the place and now I feel confident
enough to make them because I have the perfect guide.
