Book Review
When I first read through Kids Can Sew I got a really positive
feeling about it because the content is so brilliantly and brightly
illustrated it makes you want to jump into a project (after reading
through the introductory and technique sections of course). The
introduction to Kids Can Sew briefly outlines the sewing process
as well as the contents of this book. In the chapter, Getting Started,
the author describes the basics necessary for sewing accompanied
by photos of the tools and supplies making them easily identifiable.
There is also detailed information on material, measuring for clothes,
basic stitches (with diagrams of what the stitches should look like),
using a sewing machine (once again with diagrams of what you are
doing should look like including stitches and the positioning of
the material in the machine).
I really like that there are very helpful hints and tips throughout
the techniques sections to ensure success and safety of your sewing
project. Success is important for everyone but especially for children
because it gives them a sense of accomplishment and being able to
do something independently. The projects in this book range from
simple to complex so as the readers increase their sewing skills,
they can work their way up to the more difficult projects. These
projects in Kids Can Sew include: puppets, a pin cushion, clothing
(t-shirts, skirt, slippers, hat, hooded vest, dress) quilting, bag,
pillowcase, purse, and a doll and doll dress. There are variations
for some of the projects (i.e. T-shirt chic includes the Native
American and Sporty Number Style t-shirts) and the Slipper Selection
includes the Native American and Sparkly Slippers designs.
What I really like about Kids Can Sew is the style of writing geared
toward the younger age group, which ensures the children can successfully
make the projects in this book. There are instructions for additional
techniques (beyond the basics outlined at the beginning of the book)
provided before the project requiring the method. The step-by-step
instructions for the projects are accompanied by detailed drawings
of the process, which makes them even easier to understand. The
instructions for the projects are very clear and straightforward.
There is even a troubleshooting section at the back of the book
with solutions for the main things that may go wrong in the process
of making the projects in this book. There is also a helpful glossary
of sewing terms to clarify some of the words you may encounter while
reading through the instructions for a project. |
