Book Review
The crafts in the book Crafts for Valentine's Day are simple
and appealing in nature using a wide variety of materials that are
easily accessible and great for the environment. I really like that
the crafts use recyclable materials (i.e. the wallpaper leftover
from a home improvement project, old newspapers, paper grocery bags,
tissue boxes and paper towel tubes) as well as items you may have
around the house (i.e. playing cards, rubber bands and paper plates).
There are a few items you may have to purchase such as Styrofoam
balls, pipe cleaners and adhesive magnetic strip but these are all
readily available at craft or dollar stores.
There is a good selection of crafts in Crafts for Valentine's
Day that children can choose to do. Following a brief introduction
on the origin of Valentine's Day the content of this book includes
making envelopes, a puppet, a crown and a hat, party favors, Valentine's
Day card holders, decorations (i.e. a wreath and a garland), two
different ways to display your photos as well as sachets, soaps,
magnets and a scrapbook. I have always been a fan of Kathy Ross
and her craft ideas for children because she writes the instructions
for her projects in an easy to follow step-by-step format accompanied
by clear diagrams demonstrating the process. Although the skills
necessary to complete the crafts such as cutting with scissors,
drawing and tracing may be more suitable for school age children
they are adaptable for younger children with assistance from an
adult or older child and then making the craft becomes a family
affair.
