Book Review
This is not your traditional book of crochet patterns. The projects
in Cool Crochet include: sweaters, ponchos, tank tops, skirt, halter,
scarves, skully (cap), dress, bags, tops, stole, jacket, bikini,
hat and a necklace. The crocheted items are unique, fun and fashionable.
The title of the book says it all, Cool Crochet 30 Hot, Fun Designs
to Crochet and Wear. I like that there are thumbnails with models
wearing the crocheted items at the beginning of the book. You can
get a good idea of what the items look like on someone and can begin
thinking about what you want to make even before turning a page.
Under each thumbnail are the page numbers, the experience required
and the types of project. You really get a sense of where the author
got her inspiration for these projects as well as her background
in crochet from the introduction, she learned to crochet at 2 years
of age.
Cool Crochet is a very handy and user-friendly book for crochet
enthusiasts with a flair for fashion. There is an important abbreviations
section at the beginning of the book to explain the terminology
used throughout the book as well as explanations of pattern symbols,
American and U.K. terminology used and yarn choice and substitution.
The skill level, sizes, finished measurements, and materials (including
materials and tools) are listed with the instructions for every
project. There are also important notes on the crocheting of each
project contained in a distinct yellow box next to the instructions.
There are clear close-up photographs of portions of the finished
products next to the relevant section of the pattern so you can
focus on what the techniques should look like. Cool tips are contained
in a distinct green box throughout the book and an index of all
the cool tips is included at the back, which is handy and different
from any other craft book I’ve seen.
