Book Review

I really like Button Girl, More than 20 Cute-as-a-Button Projects because it takes crafting to a new level. The author incorporates the use of buttons in fashion, accessories and gifts in ways you would never have thought they could be used. At the beginning of the book there is a must read instruction section on sewing methods for the different types of buttons used in this book. Most of the projects in Button Girl require sewing with the exception of some of the projects in the accessories and the gifts chapters. In the cases where hot glue is used caution should be exercised with parental supervision or assistance as needed.

There are a wide variety of materials used in combination with buttons in this book including sunglasses and rings, felt, wood and paper. This makes for interesting and useful crafts that you can use yourself or give as gifts. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and sometimes are accompanied by hints, tips and variations. I really like that there are demonstrations of techniques required by projects such as the Blooming Buttons (clothing) and the Candy Stripe Earrings accompanying the instructions. This is very handy to have close by when you are doing the project. One thing I didn’t like were the templates being at the back of the book instead of with the respective project, which would have been easier to access.

  • Blooming Buttons (tank top)
  • Snuggly Scarf with Button Trim
  • Slumber Party Slippers
  • Simplest Button Barrette
  • Candy Stripe Earrings
  • Button Magnets
  • Dressed-up Greeting Cards
  • Pretty-as-a-Picture Frame
